If the Lord has called you to a foreign field of service, it is important to learn the language of the land. You can’t very well tell people that you love them if you haven’t made the slightest attempt to learn their language, customs, culture, history, religion, characteristics, nationality traits, etc., which are all a part of them. You can hardly hope to understand them fully . . .  read more

In 1913, a young man about twenty years old took a walking tour in the rural province of Provence (pronounced “Pró_váhnce”), in southern France. A walking tour is when you hike through the countryside with a backpack and sleeping bag, traveling mainly on back roads or trails and sleeping at campsites or local farms or villages.

(Written to a Christian worker who had recently undertaken a major long-term project for the Lord)

They’re bathed in a beautiful golden glow from above, and they take deep breaths of the heavenly air that descends on them. It’s the Lord’s temple.

(Prayer:) Oh Lord, for a breath . . .  read more

There was once a famous actor who was invited to speak at the church of his childhood, of which his old friend was now the pastor. For his contribution to the service he chose to recite Psalm 23, and did so with all the perfection of a professional orator with all the proper gesticulations and intonations and so on. When he was done, the people all applauded. “Great!” “Wonderful!” “Hurrah!”

Then the pastor arose and said, “If you will pardon me, I know you all . . .  read more

(Written to an individual who was faced with making a life-changing personal decision—a marriage proposal.)

It may surprise you to know that God likes you, His child, to make your own choices within His will. As long as you delight yourself in the Lord most of all and want to do His will, it is His delight to also give you the desires of your heart, because He’s the One who puts them there when . . .  read more
